Welcome!

Welcome to Critical Reading and Writing at Taliesin.  I have a great summer session planned out for us, and I'm looking forward to getting to know you while we explore these texts both on this blog and face-to-face in the classroom.  This blog will serve as the platform for our online discussions.  Every week, I will have questions posted to inspire your blog posts.  Students should expect to post weekly on the blog and should check in frequently to comment on students' ideas and engage in the general discussion.  For more information on blog posting and how it factors into the course see the section on "Blog Posts"in our syllabus.

To help us feel comfortable with commenting on blogger, I would like for all of you to take a moment and comment on this post by answering the following questions:

1)  What's your name and where are you from?
2)  Who are some of your major architectural influences and why? Can you post a link to an image?
3)  Do you have any experience studying critical theory?
4)  What literature courses have you taken in the past, and what were your experiences?
5)  What is one place in the world you would like to visit and why?
6)  Finally, post a link to a video, meme, or cartoon that makes you laugh.

Remember to sign your name on all of your blog posts!

  1. My name is Pablo Moncayo, I'm originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, but my parents live in Phoenix, AZ.

I wouldn't say that I have specificly an architectural influence because I enjoy the work of many architects, but I have to say that I'm very interested in designing religuious buildings and one of the buildings that I really like is "The Church of Light" by Tadao Ando. Here is a like to a video that shows a 3D flight through and lots of images.

I don't think I have a lot of experience studying critical theory, but I'm ready and excited to do it. I have taken many literature classes here at Taliesin with Michael Whaley, he was a teacher a couple of years ago but he resigned. I also worked with Colleen Halverson last season, she helped me with writing assighments for the "Silence Studio" class and other courses. Both professors were excellent and I learned a lot from them.

Before I die, I would love to go to Spain, I've seen pictures and I think I would really enjoy the architecture and the people and everything else there is to see in that part of the globe. Spanish is my first language, but the Spanish accent that people have there really melts me. It's similar to what I think of the English here in America and the English from England. When ever I go there, I would love to visit "La Sagrada Familia" by Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona, Spain.

Here is a link to one of the memes that makes me laugh...

Having said that, I do not encourage people to do that (drink and make bad choices)... hahaha

One last note, I'm very excited to take this class and improve my English skills with the help of Colleen, but I'm also excited to learn from all of the students taking this class.

    -Pablo Moncayo.

  2. Hello, my name is Sho Ishida whose hometown is Yokohama-city, Japan. I’ve been in the United States of America for approximately 2 years including the time that I had learned English Language in Cal Poly Pomona English Language Institute.

I would answer that my father, an architect in Japan, has influenced me to decide my direction of future with some major incidents in my life. I guess that most architectural students would say their architectural influence is when they encountered with a great architecture. So, they would like to design a most beautiful architecture in the world… But, my architectural design and mind guessingly came from an architectural idea, passive solar design, which is my father’s specialty. My design concept unconsciously was based on an environmental design/ sustainable design every time. Rather than a famous architect, my closest architect architecturally alters my life.
The following is my father’s website and pictures: http://www.j-ishida.co.jp/pg663.html

About the question no.3, I don’t have an experience to study critical theory, but I knew the definition of “critical theory.”

In the past, Id never had an English literature class in Japan for 23 years because I had studied German as a second language. After my B. Arch’s graduation, I started to learn English literature courses in Cal Poly Pomona ELI with Prof. Jeff Cravello. The literature was such as NO EXIT AND THREE OTHER PLAYS by JEAN-PAUL SARTRE, a play and The Secret Life of Bee. I did a bluebook exam about the book and acted as one of the character in the class… (I don’t actually like the kind of role play.) It was a hard class, but the time dramatically improved my English level.

If I can visit one place in the world, I definitely choose Turkey. The reason is because I can meet my best Turkish friend, who lives in the capital, Istanbul. Moreover, the country has a unique geological character that one river separates Istanbul. The left side of land is belonging to European Continents, and the other side is belonging to Asia Continents. I am exciting to see the different culture and character in the same city and country.

This is a youtube video making me laugh… ☺

I had learned American English for almost 1 year in English Language Institute in ENGLISH, which made me crazy... Nevertheless, I am extremely looking forward to work with you about English writing in this season and refine my crap English level for my future.

    Best regard,

Sho Ishida, Taliesin M Arch. First year.

  3. Hello everyone, I just wanted to let you know that I went to Arcadia Books yesterday and they told me that they had ordered the books a while back, but for some reason they haven't received them. They told me they were going to let Colleen know so she can let us know.
Anyways, I just wanted to save you all a trip just in case you were planning on going.

    See you later!

  4. 1) What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Daniel Knox and I am from Leawood, Kansas
    2) Who are some of your major architectural influences and why? Can you post a link to an image?
Many of my influences came from my father and brother. They are both very artistic and I began to sketch just as they still do. I began sketching everything I could find and eventually I began to look at google images of architecture and drawing those. I do not have any particular buildings that influenced me. It was more the desire to create beautiful buildings as I was replicating in my sketchbooks.
    3) Do you have any experience studying critical theory?
I began studying theory in my undergraduate degree in a course titled, Architectural Morphology, but it was not as in depth as this master’s program.
    4) What literature courses have you taken in the past, and what were your experiences?
English 101, 202, and 303 (fiction novels based on suburbia), as well as writing workshop last summer.
    5) What is one place in the world you would like to visit and why?
I would love to visit Spain, Germany, and many other euorpean countries because my last visit failed to include these countries. The architecture in European countries are amazing as well.
    6) Finally, post a link to a video, meme, or cartoon that makes you laugh.

  6. Hello, my name is Edgar Irakiza and I come from Burundi, Africa. I like the work by the architect Santiago Calatrava. I think Calatrava balances well service, architecture and art in his work. Architecture should serve humanity but also should be a showcase for beauty.
Yes, I had a critical writing class with Professor Colleen Halverson in the past. In addition, I have taken French and African literature classes in my undergraduate education.
A place on earth, I would like to visit would be the Caribbean Islands because I am interested in the richness the caribbean cultures. I like the Caribbean music, dances, and food.

  7. 1) What's your name and where are you from?
My name is Nizar Schaller. I am uprooted: born in Texas I grew up first in Sacramento, California until the age of about 7. Then in Granada, Spain, where we moved continuously up to the age of 13. That came to an end while I lived in a communal environment in the country side and I decided to move to England to go to school and get my British Passport. I was in and out of the UK for many years. Once I finished school in London and then Norwich, I went briefly to Norway and then moved to Scotland which was base for a while. I consider my childhood to be in Spain since my memories of childhood extend only so far but I still couldn't say that I am Spanish. In conclusion: I have no simple answer to that simple question.

    2) Who are some of your major architectural influences and why? Can you post a link to an image?
My major architectural influences are based on experience of architecture and the act of building and living in communities. If we focus that question on what architects have influenced me I would say those that I have worked with or for. If the question is suggestive of architects whose work I admire I would struggle to answer that question. My interest in architecture that I don't experience directly comes and goes as easily as turning the pages that document their works. It is difficult to be influenced by something you do not experience directly- at least it is for me. I could say that Frank Lloyd Wright was influential. I studied some of his architecture in the past and am now engaging with it directly. I would include Geoffrey Bawa, Hassan Fathy, Santiago Calatrava, and others as architects whose work held my curiosity at some point in the past. Currently I am looking at the work of Allied Works and Shop Architects as practices who were recently introduced to me and whose work and process I admire.

    3) Do you have any experience studying critical theory?
I studied architecture BAS at UCT in Cape Twon, South Africa. The theory course we took was quite intensely philosophical. I did some Kant readings as well as others and we touched on themes such as the Sublime. If my memory serves me right I was good at understanding it and engaging critically with the material but I was equally good at forgetting it. Having little functional application after writing the papers it got filed in a cabinet deep in the dungeons of my brain that I can scarcely access.

    4) What literature courses have you taken in the past, and what were your experiences?
I think I have addressed these above. I could include a couple of semesters at WITS university in Johannesburg where I engaged with much of the same material again. I enjoy the challenge. I would compare reading material like that to a steep climb. Although giving up on the reading half way through has less consequences, when you reach the summit of either there is a rewarding feeling of accomplishment.

    5) What is one place in the world you would like to visit and why?
I would like to go to Central Asia just beyond the Balkans. I guess the main reason is because apart from Japan, Albania is the farthest East I have been and that whole region is a big blank in my mind. I would also like to experience directly what opportunities there may be in terms of business. I still have this idea that I will earn my bread and butter through other than architecture so I can be choosy and create my own architectural projects.
